First-ever home match in Esports history held in North Texas

ALLEN, Texas – There was an Esports competition that happened in North Texas on Saturday that was the first of its kind.

Sports fans in DFW were paying attention to the NFL Draft, along with the Stars winning game two in the second round of the NHL playoffs, but thousands also showed up for an Esports competition at the Allen Event Center.

It was sold out, meaning there were more than 5,000 people who showed up Saturday.

This was the first ever home match in Esports history.

Typically, video game matches are played in Los Angeles or Las Vegas, but not on home turf.

The Dallas Fuel is a local team that plays the video game Overwatch competitively. Overwatch is shooter game that is played six versus six..

The Fuel took on the Los Angeles Valiant Saturday in their home arena.

Organizers have related this to a small kind of comic con, with the Overwatch game characters dressed up and talking to fans.

The owner and CEO of the Dallas Fuel says this Esport is only growing.

“We’ve kind of watched the progression go from comic book stores, to small hotel ballrooms, to convention centers, to now arenas, so it’s just continuing to get larger and larger,” Mike Rufil said.

There are 20 franchise teams all over the world, and Dallas Fuel is one of them.

Thousands of people will be in Allen this weekend to cheer them on.
