DALLAS, TX — Police in Dallas are investigating after a young woman filed a complaint alleging R Kelly, a 51-year-old R&B singer, knowingly gave her an STD without her knowledge or consent.
The Washington Post broke the story Sunday, writing in a report that the woman, now 20, began her eight-month relationship with Kelly when she was 19.
The woman filed a complaint with the Dallas Police Department, and The Post reported she plans to file a federal civil complaint against the singer as well.
A representative for Kelly told The Post the singer "categorically denies all claims and allegations" related to the complaint.
Lee Merritt, the woman’s attorney, told The Dallas Morning News that Kelly invited the woman backstage at one of his concerts and continued to groom her over several months to join a "sex cult" by furnishing her with shopping sprees, flights and hotel stays.
The woman decided to take legal action against R. Kelly after she tested positive for herpes earlier this year, Merritt told The News.
Police said in a statement the incident is not considered a sexual assault.
"This incident is not being investigated as a sexual assault since both parties were consenting adults," police spokesman Warren Mitchell told The News.
Kelly has come under fire in the past for inappropriate sexual relationships, including a 2017 allegation that the singer ran sex cults in Georgia and Illinois.
The woman’s attorney is slated to hold a press conference at Dallas Police Headquarters on Wednesday.
