CHUMASH BANDS


Barbareno Chumash - Members have affiliations to the Taynayan [Santa Barbara] mission and the Kashwa [Santa Barbara] reservation.

Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation - Chumash Indians living north of Los Angeles, along the California coastline. Members are from Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Kern, and Ventura Counties.

Cuyama Chumash- A group originating from the Cuyama Valley.

Island Chumash - The Chumash are working to regain the Channel Islands from which they were removed centuries ago by the Mexican and Spanish invaders.

Kagismuwas Chumash - Occupied the southwestern region of the ancient Chumash nation in southern California.  All their territory is now being used by the Vandenberg Air Force base.

Los Angeles Chumash - Members of the traditional Malibu, Tejon, and Ventura bands relocated to the Los Angeles area in the 19th Century.

Malibu Chumash - Groups were dispersed from the coast near Malibu.  Descendants of the Malibu Chumash are now found among the Tejon, Coastal, San Fernando Valley, and Ventura organizations.

Monterey Chumash - Chumash people who migrated to the Monterey peninsula.

Samala, or Santa Ynez Chumash - The only federally recognized band

San Fernando Valley Chumash - Slave laborers from the San  Fernando Valley Mission who intermarried with other tribes from the Mission.

Tecuya Chumash - An anti-colonial group which used to live in Tecuya Canyon, among the Tejon Chumash.  Most of the Tecuya were probably Kagismuwas.

Tejon Chumash - Kern County Chumash Council. The word Tejon means badger in Spanish.
